This Week in Europe
Issue 39 June 26, 2009
The goal of this section is to give you all the informations about diplomacy in Europe.

This week is a back

Since several months, I was very busy (work, my dear sciatic, travel...) and I hadn't enought time to write a new issue. In this issue, you will have a summary of what happened in Europe (tournaments) during the 12 last months. In the following issue, you will have a summary on what happened in all the European circuits during the last 12 months.
See you in Bonn, for the EuroDipCon 2009.

Part I : EuroDipCon 2009 : We are waiting for YOU
Part II : What happened in 2009?
Part III : What happened in 2008?

EuroDipCon 2009 : We are waiting for YOU

The EuroDipCon 2009 will take place in Bonn from July 31 to August 2nd. As usual, the German hobby will organise one of the most enjoyable event of the year, so don't miss it and register as soon as possible.

From André Ilievics :
We will play four rounds at a house called "Haus Annaberg" near Bonn, which is cosy and friendly place. You can see some pictures of it at http://www.annaberg.de/bilder.htm. It's definitely a great place to create a friendly and good atmosphere.
We offer packages starting from 66 € (6-bed-dorm) up to 109€ (single room) including tournament fees, free internet access, dinner on Friday evening, breakfast, lunch and dinner on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday morning.
The convention begins Friday, 31/07/2009 and ends Sunday, 02/08/2009. The first round starts Friday at about 4 p.m. and the last rounds is sunday morning at about 10 a.m. You can check in Friady starting from about noon. Sunday's round will have a top board, and it will be possible to get through it even if you miss Friday's round.
We will have plenty of time for other games, hanging around or for visiting Bonn or Cologne. And I'm sure the will be some guys going out for night life as well. ;-)
The best place to fly to is Cologne/Bonn airport. But it might also possible for a limited number of people to give you a lift from Frankfurt to the venue. If you prefer to fly to Hahn, the low cost airlines airport, there is a bus shuttle to cologne and from the you will have a connections to Annaberg, but this will be very time consuming.
If you have an questions write us an email at edc@diplomacy-bund.de; we will be lucky to help you.

Andre Ilievics and the other: Stefan Unger, Julian Ziesing, Dirk Brüggemann, Daniel Leinich, Holger Schmalle, Frank Bacher

WorldDipCon 2009, Columbus, is launched

The WorldDipCon started yesterday evening in Columbus. For the first round, we had 6 boards. I enjoyed to follow some of it.
I had the pleasure to meet Dan Lester, Sean Colman, Andrew Goff and lot of American players (including John Smythe, the first winner of an American Dipcon).

What happened in 2009 ?

13 Tournaments of Diplomacy took place during the last 6 months, which seems good (13 in 2008). But there was 13.8 players per tournament in 2009, against 18.6 players per tournament. The clash of date between Berlin and Como isn't the lonely explanation. Some hobbies stopped their activities (Ireland, Denmark, Switzerland) and some others are decreasing (France, Germany, Belgium). We should spend more energy to motivate people to come to the tournaments.
But we have several good points :
- The Italian hobby is really active with a hard fight for the CISD.
- The Swedish hobby seems back (3 tournaments this year, including the Balticon).
- The East Europe is arriving, with an EGP step in Russia, and some contacts in Ukraine.
We will see what will happen during the second part of year.

The upcoming tounaments of Diplomacy

Utrecht Diplomacy Tournament 2009 : July 10-12

Next month it's time for another Dutch caper: The one and only Utrecht Diplomacy Tournament organized by one of the tallest men in Europe... The schedule of the three days are approximately as attached.
Already 8 international players have registered for this traditional Dutch treat and we will have around 10 local players drummed up for a nice Dip-party. After or between the rounds there is plenty of time to go out for a drink, bite, clubbing or other enjoyments, so be sure to join in on the fun!
You want some help getting here or finding an accomodation, please contact me. 5 of the 5 free places have already been taken by the cunning Italians [and myself : Laurent Joly], but we have more ways to get you in here cheap or comfy, just the way you like it.
Of course any foreign players will play for FREE so come join us for this edition of the Utrecht Diplomacy Tournament!
Cheers
Frank Oosterom

BaltiCon 2009 : July 24-26

The Balticon will be the precon of the EuroDipCon 2009. It will be a cruise between Stockholm and Tallin.
From Dennis Andersson :
* The tournament will be the Swedish NDC and an EGP step.
* The tournament will be the EuroDipVacation 2009.
* There will only be two preliminary rounds of diplomacy, one each way on the ship.
* If there is time there might be an additional round in Tallinn, score not being counted for the tournament.
* Dennis Andersson will be the TD. He will prioritize having fun before following the rulebook. That means we can be flexible regarding deadlines. Family friendly. Beer friendly.
* We have a mix of newcomers and returning veterans from Sweden, some Italo-russians and French.
BaltiCon is primarily intended for us to have fun, the way the game is intended to played.

For more informations, contact Dennis Andersson.

- place. everything is arranged, I have only to place the map on the site and write a little how to reach.
